Adopt-a-Block Captains

Picture
Those who reside and work in the City of Lancaster desire an environment that is clean and attractive. A litter and trash-free city attracts residents, businesses and tourism which contribute to a prosperous and vibrant community. The City administers the Love Where You Live Initiative that contributes to the goal of a vibrant and clean City. Although these initiatives contribute to a reduction in litter, accumulation of trash continues due to carelessness of those who live, work and visit our city. The “Adopt-a-Block” program is an additional initiative that also relies on volunteers. This program is intended for organizations that want to participate on a more regular basis to monitor and maintain a specific street or area of the city.
Northeast Neighbors United
Adopt-a-Block Captain

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Get to know the neighbors in your block. Introduce yourself as the Northeast Neighbors United Block Captain to one or more adults in each house/apartment in your block.
  2. Pick-up litter on your adopted block on a weekly basis or as needed. Participate in annual Earth Day clean-up of your block.
  3. Regularly contact neighbors with news, updates, information, and opportunities related to the block and neighborhood -- using neighbors’ preferred methods of communication.
  4. Report neighbors’ concerns, questions and ideas to Northeast Neighbors United leadership and other various city departments, including the Lancaster City Alliance Bike Ambassadors.
  5. Look for opportunities for neighbors to support each other during difficult times (i.e. make sure sidewalks are shoveled for those who are not able to do so).
  6. Organize at least one event each year for your block, with help from your neighbors.
  7. Attend occasional Block Captain meetings for training, sharing ideas, and working on collaborative projects.
