1990s
Following a decades-long decline in membership, community organizers and citywide coalitions filled the void. Although we didn't hear much about the Sixth Ward Citizens Association again until a brief revival during the 1990s, there are numerous stories of like-minded residents who continued to meet together.
CRIME AND REVIVAL
Concerns about theft, vandalism and disruptive behavior motivated neighborhood leaders to revive the Sixth Ward Citizens Association. Not interested in becoming a social group, its members were vocal on crime and held the City accountable through membership in citywide coalitions. The Neighborhood Watch program and community policing became hot topics as many in the Sixth Ward felt that the City had forgotten them. Sadly, the efforts of a dedicated few were simply not enough. On September 22, 1997, the Sixth Ward Citizens Association disbanded and befittingly turned their treasury over to the City for much needed improvements at the Sixth Ward Memorial Park.
With the formation of Neighbors United in 1996, conversations about crime and neighborhood involvement were brought directly to City leaders and candidates through forums hosted by the group.
